Blaine - get fit and have fun at the National Sports Center
The National Sports Center in Blaine is unique in offering nearly every imaginable sport option. There are over 50 fields offering facilities to play soccer, lacrosse or football, an Olympic standard, quality running track and the largest ice centre in the world, which is capable of hosting 8 different matches and is the home to the US Olympic Women’s Hockey Team. Come to the centre and see what events are taking place or play a round of golf on the only PGA public golf course in Minnesota.
Bloomington - go birdwatching at the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge
There are only 4 wildlife refuge centres in the United States that can be found in urban areas. One of the best is the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge, which is situated just 10 miles outside of Bloomington. Its network of marshlands and lakes combined with forests make it an excellent bird watching location, and is home to a number of nesting Bald Eagles. The park is a great favourite of photographers and hunters can also part take in their pastime, during the shooting season.
Bloomington - spend, spend, spend at the Mall of America
The largest shopping mall in the United States can be found at the Mall of America in Bloomington. Unsurprisingly it is one of the most popular tourist sites in the area. It has a massive 4 million square feet of space that is home to 500 different stores as well as 50 restaurants and diners. All of the major brand stores can be found in the mall along with a number of smaller, boutique stores that offer unique local produce and products.
Brooklyn Center - take a brewery tour and a sample
Starting in the owner’s garage, the Surly Brewing Company is now housed in a 5,000 square feet building and produces some of the best beers in the state. This is a working brewery so tours are restricted to Saturday afternoons. They require you to book online before hand. But it is worth the effort as in addition to seeing how the beer is made, you also get the chance to sample it.
Coon Rapids - spend a day at the Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park
Created as a result of damming the river around the town, the Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park soon became a favourite location for families to spend a day out or for individuals to indulge in their pastimes of boating and fishing. The lake is very busy during the summer months and the whole park is transformed in winter, when it becomes excellent cross country skiing.
Eagan - meet your favourite cartoon characters at the Nickelodeon Universe
The only one of its kind in the world, the Nickelodeon Universe gives you the opportunity to meet all your favourite cartoon characters, whilst plunging at high speeds on the rollercoaster, or on a number of other exhilarating rides in this theme park. Located just outside of Eagan this park is open every day with extended hours on Friday and Saturday nights.
Minneapolis - explore the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden
Set in over 11 acres, the Minneapolis Sculpture Park offers you the opportunity to explore some of the natural flora of the area. Indulge yourself in some of the very unusual and beautiful sculptures created by artists from all over the country including Atelier Van Lieshout’s ‘The Good, the Bad and the Ugly’. The gardens were opened in 1988 and were constructed and designed around the much earlier gardens of the Kenwood Armoury, that previously stood on this site.
Minneapolis - view the beautiful Minneapolis City Hall
Taking just 4 years to build the main building, but a further 14 years to complete all, the beautiful Minneapolis City Hall with its imposing granite clock tower is just over 23 feet and at the time of being built was claimed to be the tallest in the world. It stands in the centre of the city, and can be seen for miles. The interior of the building was filled with marble and intricate staircases, although some of this has gone to make way for more offices.
Plymouth - stroll and explore the Clifton E. French Regional Park
Take a quiet walk with the family along the many wildlife trails in the Clifton E French Regional Park in Plymouth and you will be amazed at what you may find. There are wild deer all around as well as numerous other wildlife hidden amongst the trees and srubs. There is a great little beach to relax, with volleyball nets for the more enthusiastic and energetic. The park is also a popular spot for local fishermen, and the trees create a stunning colour backdrop during the fall.
Saint Paul - take a tour to the Minnesota State Capitol
Everything about the Minnesota State Capitol in Saint Paul is imposing from its magnificent facade with its marble dome to its stunning interiors. The building has a number of interesting sculptures to look at such as a gilded 4 horse and chariot outside the building, while inside are persons of interest that have affected Minnesota’s past. Take a tour of the building and look out for the Lady Minnesota Sculpture, high up, overlooking the House of Representatives.
