Things to do in Senegal
Dakar - walk up to the African Renaissance Monument
Located on a hill overlooking Senegal’s capital city Dakar, stands the towering African Renaissance Monument, depicting a man and woman, with a child climbing out of a volcano. It is thought to symbolize the birth of man in the African continent. At 49 metres in height, it is one of the tallest monuments, is larger in size than the Statue of Liberty in New York. Made entirely of bronze and costing more than US$25m, the statue has courted controversy since its unveiling in 2010.
Dakar - stroll around Le Lac Rose
Le Lac Rose or Lake Retba as it is also known, gets its name from the pink waters of the lake, caused by harmless bacteria. The pink colour water becomes progressively darker, during the dry season. During your visit you will likely observe workers collecting the salt from the bottom of the lake, which has been deposited by the waters, that can contain up to 40% salt, which is similar high level, salt content of the Dead Sea in Israel.
Saly - catch dinner on a big game fishing trip
The best time to go big game fishing in Senegal is between June and September. Some of the best fishing sites can be found around Saly, where fishing has been an important industry, since way back in the 15th century. There are over 20 different species of game fish that can be caught in the waters, some of them very large, due to the upwelling of cold water in the region, and the rich plankton that they carry.
Saly - climb the cliffs at Popenguine
The ancient cliffs at Popenguine, just outside Saly stretch for kilometers south of the town, and a walk along its cliffs will provide wonderful views out over the Atlantic Ocean. Some of the cliffs are secure enough to allow climbing, but this is for only experienced, well equipped climbers who want a different challenge to the sedentary life that the region normally offers. Once you have tired of the cliffs, enjoy a relaxing stroll or just sit and rest on one of the good, sandy beaches.
Introduction of Senegal
There are plenty of places across the country where people can find hotels in Senegal. The West African country has a shore on the Atlantic Ocean and borders with Guinea Bissau, Guinea, Mali and Mauritania. Gambia also sits in the centre of Senegal’s western coast. Many people visiting here choose to stay in Senegal hotels all across the land. Senegal hotels come in various forms, with everything from basic to luxury options. Tourists looking for hotels in Senegal will probably find the largest concentration in the country’s capital city of Dakar. There are quite a few lavish options here for those looking to live it up while in the country but some cheaper lodgings can also be located towards the edge of the city. The former capital of Saint Louis is also home to some of the best hotels and the ports and harbours at Dakar, Richard Toll, Podor and Matam, have the biggest selection of budget options.
