Bangkok, Chinatown intro. Often off the agenda for many visitors to the Thai capital, Bangkok's Chinatown is more anonymous than Chinese areas of other big cities as it blends in with the rest. Yet by night, a time when food stalls sprout up everywhere offering a host of typical Chinese dishes, the tell-tale neon signs indicate the area's Chinese heritage. This is a good area to seek out antiques and trinkets given the wealth of Chinese, family-owned shops here. The large Chinese presence here dates back to the 18th century. Leng Buai la Shrine with its colourful dragons and Chinese inscriptions was built even earlier, in 1658, and as such, it is the oldest Chinese temple in Thailand, not to mention a fascinating place to look around for those with Buddhist temple burnout. Chinatown hotels are generally more traditional than those in more touristy areas of the capital and prices are often better value. Most accommodation here is budget or mid-range.
