Penang, Bayan Lepas intro. Penang Island, a historic blend of colonial flavours on top of centuries of Persian, Indian, Chinese and other visitors, offers an incredible mix of sites and experiences. Georgetown, the capital city, contains such a wealth of history and culture that it enjoys UNESCO World Heritage status. For many business travellers, however, hotels in Banyan Lepas, offer the best access to both the local airport and the many industrial areas where electronic parts and products are produced. The local highways are excellent, with much development in recent years having endowed the island with wide, smooth roads. For the best taste of history, make the six-kilometre trek to Georgetown, where a mix of colonial architecture, Chinese shop houses, ornate Chinese temples and mosques awaits. Food is a famous part of the local culture, and the streets reward exploration with all manner of local delicacies. The best concentration of food can be found at the night food market on Gurney Avenue, about 20 minutes away.
