Sawai Madhopur, Ranthambore National Park intro. The northern Indian state of Rajasthan is home to Ranthambore National Park, located in Sawai Madhopur district. One of the best-known national parks on the sub-continent, its terrain was formerly used as hunting grounds by the Maharajas of Jaipur, and is now a favourite tourist destination for eco-tourists and wildlife photographers. Home to a wide variety of animals and reptiles, the park is inhabited by the sought-after diurnal tigers, with leopards and other jungle cats plus numerous species of deer vying with gloriously coloured bird species for attention. Within the park are a varied selection of Ranthambore National Park hotels, lodges and resorts, all of which offer safaris and wildlife packages catering for every preference and length of stay, from weekends to several weeks. The park is thickly forested, with its numerous water holes, pools and lakes the best places to view its wildlife. The largest lake, Padam Talao, is renowned for its tiger sightings and vast carpet of water lilies.
