Trivandrum, Poovar intro. The small Arabian Sea coastal village of Poovar lies in the Trivandrum district of Kerala State in south India and is a popular tourist destination for its breathtaking beach and stunning natural beauty. The natural harbour of Vizhinjam is close by and forms the estuary of the Neyyar River, while the village itself is the legendary site of Ophir, a port used by King Solomon's trading ships. Long ago, Poovar was an important trading centre for timber, ivory, fragrant sandalwood and spices. Visitors nowadays enjoy its quiet and peaceful ambiance. Poovar is located some 30kms from the district's main city of Trivandrum and boasts a small number of beach resorts and Poovar hotels giving access to the beach. One of the most unusual hotels features floating as well as land-based individual lodgings and has all the features of a modern resort. Apart from chilling on the golden sands, visitors to Poovar can take trips along the inland waterways, try Ayurvedic treatments, shop at the weekly local market, swim, snorkel and enjoy the delicious local cuisine.
