Mie, Shima intro. The city of Shima is situated within Mie Prefecture in the east of Japan. The city is famous for its sacred Shinto shrines. A Shinto shrine is a place of worship for Zen Buddhists. The shrines are said to be homes of Shinto gods. A shrine consists of a main offering hall, a stage for dance performances, statues and other objects set within a beautiful Japanese Garden. The Ise Jingu in Shima has two shrines several kilometres apart. These are the most sacred of the Shinto shrines in Japan and are wonderful places to visit. The Oharaimachi is the approach to the inner Ise shrine. It is one kilometre in length and is lined with wonderful traditional Japanese buildings which are now shops and restaurants. The shrines are easy to get by bus from the centre of Shima and there are many excellent Shima hotels in the city centre to suit all budgets.
