Olathe, Downtown intro. The fifth-largest city in Kansas is Olathe, the county seat of Johnson County. It is considered part of the Kansas City Metropolitan Area, bordered by Gardner in the southwest, Lenexa in the north and Overland Park in the east. This Kansas City suburb of around 130,000 residents makes for a convenient base for visitors to the area who want to experience its larger neighbour's attractions, yet who don't want to stay in the heart of the busy metropolis. The city is characterised by its two lakes, Cedar Lake and Lake Olathe. Options for eating out span Chinese and all the usual fast food varieties, from tacos to pizza, but it is better to head into Kansas City proper for anything upscale. Olathe City Center hotels include major chains with excellent facilities along with budget options. Most international visitors enter the area via Kansas City International Airport, 40 miles to the north.
