Bar Harbor, Downtown intro. Bar Harbor, Maine, is among the best known summer colonies in the northeastern-most American state. Although the town's permanent population is just 4,820, approximately two-and-a-half million people visit Acadia National Park, much of which is located within the town's boundaries. Rates at Bar Harbor City Center hotels vary dramatically, with summer as the busiest and costliest season. None of Maine's many islands are as large as Mount Desert Island, where Bar Harbor is located and where nearly 100 cruise ships dock between May and October. The town band plays live at the Village Green gazebo on Monday and Thursday nights, but this centrally located park is otherwise a quiet place to nap, read, or just relax. Two renowned brewing companies offer regular guided tours, while Kebo Valley is America's eighth oldest golf course. Another course, Pirate's Cove Adventure Golf, is especially geared towards children, complete with a window across the street where they can order ice cream afterwards. Sailing and whale watching tours along Frenchman's Bay are also popular here.
