Henderson Downtown hotels map
Henderson, Downtown intro. The small city of Henderson is situated in the middle of central North Carolina, near the Virginia border. Most Henderson City Center hotels enjoy convenient locations along Interstate 85. This 'gateway city', just a 40-minute drive north of North Carolina's state capital, Raleigh, may be fairly small in size, but it enjoys a tremendous history dating back to at least 1785. This was the year the first settlers' residence was constructed in the town, but up until the 1950s, there were no public parks or recreational programs here. Today, that has changed dramatically and there are at least a dozen parks in Henderson, in addition to the Aycock Recreation Complex. The recreation complex contains two paved walking tracks, fields for softball and baseball, multipurpose meeting rooms, an aquatic centre, and a gymnasium. One of the larger parks, Fox Pond Park, also contains nature trails, picnic areas, courts for volleyball and tennis, a playground, a horseshoe pitch, and shuffleboard facilities. However, the most popular outdoor area of all is the nearby Kerr Lake State Recreation Area, centred around the massive manmade Kerr Lake and its nearly-1,368kms of shoreline.
