Las Cruces, Downtown intro. The second-biggest city in the US state of New Mexico, Las Cruces enjoys an attractive location close to the stunning Organ Mountains. In addition to an impressive group of museums, the city is also home to the New Mexico State University. Hotels in Las Cruces City Center are within easy reach of most museums. The university, which sits at the southern end of town, offers archaeology and culture in the University Museum, and fossils in the Zuhl Collection. The New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum is a large site to the east of the university campus. Local history can be enjoyed for free at the Branigan Cultural Center. The town also offers its own museums covering fine art and culture, natural history and the story of the railways. The old town of Mesilla, located to the west, is home to an attractive historical district that includes adobe buildings. The Organ Mountains offer plenty of room for hiking and climbing in a drive of about 30 minutes.
