Yakima, Downtown intro. Located to the southwest of beautiful Mount Rainier National Park is the city of Yakima, county seat of Yakima County and home to almost 100,000 residents. The city is set in Yakima Valley, famous as an apple-growing area as well as for its fine local wines and its production of 75 per cent of the hops grown in the USA. To the southeast and south of the city is the Indian Reservation. The city is a conglomeration of smaller towns and villages set on the Yakima River, with outdoor recreation, hiking and walking as well as fishing popular along the banks. Close by are several small lakes, perfect for summer swimming. Yakima City Center hotels, green spaces and commercial buildings have replaced the piecemeal former shopping mall developments, now relocated to the outskirts, with city centre entertainment venues, boutique-style shopping, restaurants and bars pulling in the weekend crowds. The street to storefront remodelling involved seems to have pleased the residents, as well as centrally located hotel guests, as has the return of local landmark the Sports Benter Tavern to the downtown district.
