San Diego, Miramar intro. Best known for its Marine Corps air station, Miramar lies roughly 15 miles to the north of San Diego and less than 10 miles from the Pacific coast and Torrey Pines State Park. While the air station here is no longer home to the TOPGUN training programme featured in the 1986 Hollywood blockbuster of the same name, fighter pilots are still trained here. Visitors can learn more about the installation at the on-site Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum. The busiest time of the year for Miramar hotels is during the yearly Miramar Airshow in October when attendees can see cutting-edge fighter planes in action. Away from the military base, the small town has some commercial interest but most visitors prefer to make the short trip into San Diego proper for shopping and sightseeing. The state reserve of Torrey Pines, just to the west, is bordered by a golf course and offers a beach, wildlife spotting and hiking trails.
