Burton upon Trent, City Centre intro. Burton upon Trent is Britain's brewing capital; there are currently five main brewers that operate in the town. The local water is what has caused companies to set up here, as it contains higher levels of dissolved salts than normal which, in turn, enable more hops to be added. Visitors can find out all about the processes and the significant brewing heritage at the National Brewery Centre, which contains historic vehicles, interactive displays and the oldest micro brewery in England. The centre has a bar, which naturally serves local beers, while the traditional pubs or Burton upon Trent City Centre hotels are also good places to try the local brews. Another venue in town is The Brewhouse which, although it may sound like a pub, is actually an arts centre with a changing schedule of theatrical performances and exhibitions. St Modwen's church is another prominent feature in the town due to its Gothic architecture, as are St Paul's and St Margaret's.
