Stockport, City Centre intro. Stockport, historically part of Cheshire, is set on the banks of the River Mersey, just 10kms from the centre of Manchester, forming the huge city's largest borough. A tiny town known only for its hemp cultivation and rope production until the 16th century, it had become famous for its silk by the 18th century and moved on to cotton during the Industrial Revolution. Less well -is its long heritage as a hatters' town, with the last factory closing as late as 1997. Stockport's main landmark is the Stockport Viaduct, dating from 1840 and spanning its 27 brick arches over the river. The giant railway bridge featured frequently in famous Stockport artist LS. Lowry's works. The city's industrial central core is at present part of a giant regeneration scheme aimed at revitalising the residential and retail markets in and around Manchester's city centre. Stockport City Centre hotels should benefit from increased visitor numbers once the scheme is completed.
