Poros, Askeli intro. When a beach is just minutes away from Athens, it's guaranteed to be popular; this is certainly true of the island of Poros and its favourite beachside tourist haunt Askeli. Ferries regularly zip across the water to the main harbour at Poros Town, where visitors will discover an incredibly charming community filled with historic sites like the Clock Tower and a wealth of amenities among its hilly streets. Most travellers come to Poros for one thing: the beach. While there are 10 different coves on the island, nearly everyone heads straight for Askeli, a pure tourist resort destination. With dozens of Askeli hotels to choose from, there is no problem finding somewhere to stay just steps from its soft white sand. The only thing lacking in town is a sense of Greek traditional life, but it makes up for that with tonnes of fun water sports and a buzzing nightlife in the many tavernas and bars that dot the village.
