Khomas, Windhoek intro. The capital of Namibia, Windhoek, lies in the Khomas Highlands, a vast plateau surrounded by wild hills. Windhoek International Airport is located 45kms from the city centre and is the main air hub in the country for those arriving on a safari holiday. Accommodation in Windhoek hotels at all levels and prices is easily found, with many located in the city centre, jostling for space with arcades, craft markets, small shopping malls, restaurants, bars and lively nightlife. Western foods are easily found here as Windhoek has had a resident expat community for many years. Public transport doesn't exist here, but shared taxis or walking work well as most visitor facilities are located in the centre of the city. The Khomas Highlands are 1,700m above sea level, with Windhoek the commercial and cultural centre of Namibia. Nearby is the Daam Viljoen Game Reserve, a popular safari destination. For an African city, Windhoek is considered to be safe, especially in the centre of town, provided sensible precautions are taken.
