Cairo, Zamalek intro. Zamalek is a well-to-do residential district of Greater Cairo, Egypt. It occupies the southern section of Gezira Island, which is stunningly set in the middle of the Nile River. It has managed to preserve some of its beautiful greenery. Architectural highlights here include Cairo Tower, the Cairo Opera House and Opera Square. Whereas most of the city is a bustling, jostling affair, Zamalek retains the air of quietude. Its leafy streets are lined with apartment blocks and villas from the 1800s. Still, many good restaurants and bars keep the district hopping after dark. The area's cultural scene is alive with art galleries and the Museum of Islamic Ceramics. Once called the Garden of Plants for the grand display of exotic plants brought here from around the world, Zamalek is also home to Gezirah Palace. Zamalek hotels offer the fantastic combination of proximity to hip nightlife along with a place to sleep peacefully for the night.
