Hluhluwe, City Centre intro. The town of Hluhluwe is slightly inland from South Africa's eastern Indian Ocean shoreline. It receives many tourists annually as it is a convenient location from which to explore Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game Reserve and St Lucia Wetlands Park. The town is within five kilometres of both of these popular draws. The central precinct of town is close to the railway station. The N2 motorway, the main road along the coast from Durban, passes west of the centre. There are several Hluhluwe City Centre hotels and game lodges in this district. Most of these places are self-contained facilities with on-site swimming pools, bars and restaurants. There are a few eateries in town as well as a number of shops and street stalls where locally grown pineapples, sugar cane juice and necessities for wildlife safaris can be bought. The edge of St Lucia Lake is east of the centre and a comfortable walk for people with a reasonable level of fitness. Boat tours on the lake are an unforgettable experience with magnificent scenery, wading birds and hippopotamuses.
