Russell, Beach intro. Russell Beach, in northern New Zealand, is a peninsula that is part of the Bay of Islands. This area is one of the most scenic in New Zealand and one must-do activity on any trip here is a scenic flight over the area in a sea plane. A less expensive option is to take the ferry to the Bay of Islands. Most Russell Beach hotels and bed and breakfasts are located right on Kororareka Bay, with several others situated inland on Chapel and Wellington streets. To learn about the local history including Maori history and the bygone era of the whaling industry, head to the Russell Museum. This area's main industry in the past was whaling and it is still a popular game fishing destination. If game fishing is of interest, hire a boat and enjoy a day on the ocean. This area is home to New Zealand's oldest Anglican church, the Christ Church.
