Taupo, City Centre intro. The community of Taupo, New Zealand is situated on the northeast coast of the nation's biggest lake, Lake Taupo, in the middle of the North Island. The city is best known for its surrounding natural attractions such as nearby Mount Tauhara, Huka Falls, Kaingaroa Forest and the Waikato River. However, guests at Taupo City Centre hotels will find several more attractions just steps outside their chosen accommodation. There are no large shopping centres in Taupo, but its wide streets are lined with trees and filled with unique restaurants, sunny sidewalk cafes and more than 200 different shops. Many of these shops specialise in selling all the outdoor adventure gear visitors will need to explore its surrounding natural beauty. The District Museum of Art contains the magnificent Maori-influenced Ora Gardens alongside many masterpieces by local artists. The art museum is the starting point of weekly guided walking tours of the city, which take visitors past the Boat Harbour, Tongariro Domain and several other historic sites each Sunday afternoon.
