Hobart, Battery Point hotels map
Hobart, Battery Point intro. One of Hobart's plushest suburbs, Battery Point is the area in which British colonial forces positioned their cannons back in the early 19th century, hence the name. Today there is little of this history remaining but there are still a number of old houses that rub shoulders with newer, upmarket properties - over 60 of the buildings here fall under the protection of the National Trust. Aside from the picturesque promenade and the surrounding parks that make this area a great place for strolling, Battery Point boasts Salamanca Market, which comes alive every Saturday morning and is not to be missed. Many Battery Point hotels are small, intimate affairs including a range of bed and breakfasts in some centuries-old buildings. Given the setting and the heritage on display, prices are at the steep end but the service and the setting is certainly worth it.
