Strahan, City Centre intro. Strahan is a town of over 600 people, located on Tasmania's west coast. It is considered to be one of the most remote parts of this Australian island, situated in the north of Macquarie Harbour and around 186 miles from the state capital, Hobart. Most travellers reach Strahan City Centre hotels by driving here from Hobart, on the A10; this is a journey which takes around five hours. There is a also a short train line between Queenstown and Strahan, the West Coast Wilderness Railway, but this nowadays operates solely as a tourist attraction. There are plenty of water-based activities in Macquarie Bay, such as yachting, boat trips and adventure tours. On arrival, the best place to learn about the town is at the Visitors Centre, located on The Esplanade. Not only does it provide tourist information, it also a hosts a long-running theatre production, 'The Ship That Never Was'. The Esplanade is also lined with seafood restaurants, while guests can buy fresh crayfish from some of the town's smaller shops on request.
