Surin intro. Elephants, Khmer ruins and exquisite silk products are just a few of the surprises in store for visitors to Surin, a quiet town in the far eastern frontier of Thailand, near the border with Cambodia. Each November, the renowned Elephant Roundup kicks things into top gear as people (and elephants) from all over descend on Surin to celebrate the mighty beast and its rich heritage. This region of Thailand is also home to the best collection of Khmer-era temples in the country. Surin is the perfect base for excursions to Prasat Ta Meuan and Prasat Sikhoraphum, two of the 12th century temple complexes in the area. Silk is another important part of this city's heritage, and its shops are excellent places to purchase top quality silk weavings. The city itself is devoid of major attractions but offers a truly authentic Thai experience with its own unique style. Visitors will find a good selection of Surin hotels should they decide to linger and explore this little-visited corner of the kingdom.
