Kolkata intro. Kolkata, located on the eastern part of India, is the capital of the state of West Bengal. Known for its cultural heritage, this city is steeped in history, with many buildings dating back to colonial days, when it was the capital of the British Raj. There are some really impressive structures in the city, such as: the Victoria Memorial, an early 20th century memorial to the queen; the Calcutta High Court, the oldest such court in India; and majestic, Gothic Revival St Paul's Cathedral. Exploring the city on foot or by taxi, rickshaw or bus can be fun. One of the most opulent buildings in the city is the Marble Palace, built by Raja Rajendra Mullick in 1835. The palace features neo-classical architecture and lots of marble, hence the name. Next to the palace is the Marble Palace Zoo, which is home to a beautiful aviary. One museum well worth visiting is the Indian Museum, which showcases Indian culture, art and history. Visitors will find plenty of Kolkata hotels to choose from, dotted around the city centre and the University of Calcutta. Author:
