West Yellowstone intro. Yellowstone National Park is one of the most famous visitor destinations in the US, for its stunning natural beauty, volcanic hot springs, variety of wildlife and outdoor activities. Established in 1872 as the world's first national park, it offers vast acreage and varied eco-systems set across three northern states, Wyoming, Montana and Idaho. More than 1,000 archaeological sites are here, with many charming old buildings in the towns and villages within its borders. The entire park and everything in it, including the many Yellowstone National Park hotels, is set above the continent's largest underground super volcano. Half of the planet's geothermal features are here, fuelled by this active monster, which has erupted at least twice with unimaginable force over the last two million years. A mega fauna location famous for its grizzly bears and wolves, Yellowstone's vast grasslands and forests hold many hundreds of species of all kinds as well as unique flora, forests and the largest bison herd in the US. Numerous outdoor activities take place here, and literally millions of visitors arrive year-round. For nature-lovers, Yellowstone is an essential once-in-a-lifetime destination.
