Charlottesville intro. Charlottesville is a city in Virginia named after a consort of Great Britain’s King George III. It is a lively tourist destination with several attractions and an extensive roster of Charlottesville hotels. Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe, both former US presidents, were from Charlottesville, and many local attractions are dedicated to their memory. Most of the major sites are either on the Historic Downtown Mall or in close proximity to the University of Virginia. One of the most important sites is Monticello, which was the estate of Thomas Jefferson. Many tourists stay at hotels in Charlottesville explicitly to visit this famous residence. Monroe’s former residence is called Ash Lawn Highland is also well worth visiting. It is also rewarding to head out into the countryside, strung with vineyards and horse stables. A colonial era atmosphere persists in this part of the country. In the evening, visitors return to their hotels in Charlottesville and enjoy the shops and restaurants on the pedestrian mall.
