Captiva Island hotels map
Captiva Island intro. With its tropical location just off the east coast of Florida, Captiva Island is a popular destination for beach-goers with its long stretches of sand, good weather and striking scenery in and around the local wildlife refuge. Access here is straightforward on the Sanibel Causeway. Since its construction in the 1960s, the island has prospered and seen a large increase in the number of visitors and indeed, in part-time celebrity inhabitants. Tarpon Bay, which lies in the protected area, has seen a steady increase in tourism, particularly cruises and boat trips offering a view of the local wildlife and fishing and other activities. Kayaking is also popular here among the crocodiles, manatees and dolphins that live in and around the water. Captiva Island hotels are concentrated along the southern coast at Sanibel where the causeway connects. This area competes with Western Gulf Drive as the most popular place to stay here.
