Bergen op Zoom intro. Bergen op Zoom is a popular holiday town of 65,500 citizens located in Holland's North Brabant province. With its founding in the early 13th Century and having been handed city status in 1266, there are plenty of historical buildings to be explored here, as well as architecture that is unique to this part of Europe. Hotels in Bergen op Zoom tend to be located as close as possible to these historic areas and to many of the town's other important attractions, such as the Gevangenpoort; the oldest monument in the region. Bergen op Zoom is the birthplace of a number of notable Dutch artists and as such, visitors can expect to find many galleries and exhibitions scattered throughout the town centre. With its proximity to Belgium and the major city of Antwerp, tourists can literally cross the border and overnight in this country - perhaps to buy some of its famous chocolate - before returning to the Netherlands in the morning.
