Tokaj intro. The town of Tokaj, Hungary and its surrounding wine growing region was officially mentioned for the first time in 1067. Today, the sweet wine called Tokaji, which is produced in this area of northeast Hungary, is so famous that it is even mentioned in the nation's national anthem. In fact, most Tokaj hotels have their own wine cellars and tasting areas. Not surprisingly, one of the local museum's three permanent exhibitions is dedicated to the production and history of Tokaji wines, but the museum also contains an aquarium where fish from the nearby Tisza River swim. Another river, called Bodrog, meets the Tisza River here, and the Tisza River shoreline includes a public beach that is popular among water sports fans. Most of the town's churches and buildings date from the 18th and 19th centuries, and Kopasz Hill provides Tokaj with an impressive backdrop. The local wine festival takes place between May and June, while a harvest festival occurs between September and October.
