Castelo Branco hotels map
Castelo Branco intro. The Portuguese city of Castelo Branco is located in the centre of the country, near the border with Spain. The biggest city in the Beira Baixia region and the fourth largest in the country, Castelo Branco is home to a polytechnic institute. The name of the city comes from Castra Leuca, a fortified Luso-Roman settlement, or castrum, that once sat on the hill named Colina da Cardosa. This position is today occupied by a castle built much later by the Knights Templar. The city's recorded history essentially starts around the year 1182, with the donation of land to the Templars. The impressive castle can easily be reached from hotels in Castelo Branco on foot or by car. This may be one of the few cities where such an incredible castle can be outshone, but the Jardim Episcopal achieves this feat. A range of stone statues sits amid a stunning mix of citrus trees, water features and carefully-manicured plants in this fabulous Portuguese Baroque garden, attracting large numbers of tourists. The gardens are located outside the former Bishops Palace, which today houses a museum. The community is also famous for the cheese that bears its name.
