Maggia intro. In the south of Switzerland, close to the Italian border in the district of Vallemaggia, Maggia is a quaint little town with some beautiful old buildings and the ubiquitous Alpine mountain scenery that is a feature of the country. With a name meaning 'May' in Italian, the local language here, Maggia was supposedly settled during this month way back in the 12th century although Roman ruins dating back about 1,000 years earlier have been found here. Indeed, this is a historic town with a great deal of heritage still on display. The St Mauritius Church that still stands today dates back to 1636 although it has since been renovated in the mid-1990s. An even older oratory, Madonna delle Grazie, is 500 years old and features impressive frescoes that are a highlight here. Maggia hotels are few and far between but there is a handful close to the main La Piatela Road.
