Visp intro. Visp is the small and lovely capital of the district of the same name in Valais, a canton in German-speaking south-central Switzerland. The two sensational valleys of Mattertal and Saastal meet up here. It contains 24 delightful Valais mountain communities crowning mountaintops and nestling in the Rhone Valley. As there are five skiing areas here, this beautiful area is sometimes called the 'Valais in pocket format'. This makes a perfect trailhead from which to begin exploring Valais. Visp, located in the Rhone Valley, is a major centre for wine production in Valais, and its vineyards are fun to explore. Visp hotels range from standard accommodation to holiday apartments, mountain huts and campsites. Due to the new Lotschberg tunnel, the district capital is now a new railway hub for central and upper Valais. It's thus easier now for taking daytrips to the scenic Aletsch Glacier, Leukerbad and Saas-Fee, Zermatt. Come wintertime, there's terrific skiing in the Rund um Visp region's Augstbord and Vispertal resort areas, and in summer there's 500kms of trekking trails to explore.
