Milas intro. Milas is a historic city located in Turkey's southwestern Mugla Province. The town was previously the capital of the ancient Caria Kingdom and is now best known for its agriculture and aquacultural processing. There are a number of archaeological sites to visit in the city, with the surrounding walls of the temenos, a temple dedicated to Zeus, still visible, as are a row of columns. One of the town's two ancient symbols is the Baltalikapi, its name meaning 'gate with an axe', which is a well-preserved Roman gate named so because of the double-headed axe that was carved into its keystone. There are also many historical buildings in Milas which date back to the Ottoman and Mentese periods. Orhan Bey Mosque and the Great Mosque both date back to the 14th century and are worth visiting. The city is well known for its carpet making, which attracts many visitors. There are a number of Milas hotels to choose from when in the city, including many four and five-star options at relatively low prices.
