Bretenoux intro. In France's scenic Lot region in the southwest is the pleasant town of Bretenoux, the largest of the 16 villages in the Dordogne Valley. The area here is incredibly scenic, featuring three unique geological styles: the tableland, the Segala and the valley. Outdoor lovers will find a wealth of recreation on hand, from biking and hiking to rafting and hot air balloon rides. The medieval town of Bretenoux is best experienced within its walled historic core known as the Bastide, which looks much as it did centuries ago. The 13th century town sits along the banks of the River Cere, with a classic cobblestone market square at its heart that bursts into life every Tuesday and Saturday morning when the local market happens. Above the town, clinging to the sheer cliff is the surreal Castle of Castelnau-Bretenoux, a must-see for any visitor to the town. There are plenty of options for a delicious French meal, a drink or some shopping around the centre. Most travellers spend a night or two to really soak in the medieval ambiance, and there are numerous hotels in Bretenoux catering to the demand.
