Saalfelden intro. Saalfelden is an Austrian town in the state of Salzburg with around 16,000 residents. The town is a popular destination with outdoors enthusiasts, who come to enjoy leisure activities in the surrounding areas. In summer, Ritzensee Lake is popular with swimmers, while wintertime sees it filled with young ice-skaters. In addition, trails and paths through Kollingwald Forest are used for cross-country skiing during the winter months. The sporting nature of the town has led to the hosting of an annual triathlon event. Visitors travelling here in August should ensure that they book Saalfelden hotels well ahead of the event. Less-active types should not feel excluded as they can still enjoy the beautiful mountain scenery as well as watch one of the ski-jumping events at the town's Felix Gottwald Stadium. The town is located near Munich and Salzburg, off the A8, meaning that travellers can approach Saalfelden from either city. Alternatively, trains depart from Salzburg every 30 minutes, stopping in the nearby town of Bad Reichenhall.
