Makkah hotels map
Makkah intro. Makkah, or Mecca as it is often spelt, is situated 70kms inland from Jeddah and the Red Sea coast, in western Saudi Arabia. The city is Islam's most sacred as it was the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad and where the Islamic bible, the Koran, was written. All adult Muslims try to complete the Hajj pilgrimage at least once in their lifetimes and the period of Dhu al-Hijjah sees several million people descend on Makkah. There is an abundance of Makkah hotels in town, with many in the environs of the Grand Mosque (Masjid al-Haram). The mosque is the globe's biggest and surrounds the Kaaba, a 13m square structure which Hajj pilgrims are required to walk around. Also in the mosque's compound is the Zamzam Well, a source of water believed to be a gift from God. Jabal al-Nur Mountain is three kilometres from the city and the location of Hira Cave. The cave is said to be the spot where the angel Jibreel first spoke to Muhammad. The 600-step stairway up to Hira is packed with pilgrims at the time of the Hajj. Only Muslims can visit the city, a rule which is strictly enforced. Author:
