Sana'a intro. Sana, also spelt Sanaa, is the capital city of Yemen. Yemen is on the Arabian Peninsula, south of Saudi Arabia and is about 130kms inland from Yemen’s Red Sea coast. Sana’s ancient quarter is ringed by an eight metre-high defensive clay walls. The quarter contains ornate architectural delights, including 100 mosques and a number of Sana hotels. The city’s landmark, Bab al-Yaman gate provides entry to the old quarter and the city’s main souq (market) begins just behind the gate. Most of the old quarter’s Sana hotels, housed in traditional edifices, are in the immediate vicinity of the gate. The souq has Asian spices, flat breads, local delicacies, hardware, souvenirs and antiques for sale. Nearby is the imposing Great Mosque (Jami al-Kabir). Sana hotels provide a start point for tours to places such as Wadi Dahr. The Wadi is a green valley holding charming villages and Imam Yahya’s palace, which has been constructed on top of a large rock.
