Taiz intro. In the Yemeni Highlands of southwestern Yemen, Taiz (Ta'izz) is a city that is dramatically situated along a steep mountainside. The streets of the former capital zigzag along the slope beneath the grand peak of Mount Saber. An ancient Mizrahi quarter known as Jewish Sharab is located in the affluent city, contributing to its status as a major industrial centre. Sitting majestically atop a hill in the middle of the city, the recently restored Cairo Castle boasts a beautiful garden where tourists can seek peace and take in the busy urban landscape from above. In each of the old city quarters, the brown-brick houses are offset by stark white mosques, the most famous of which are Mudhaffar, Ashrafiya and Muctabiya. Visitors can access the city from Ta'izz International Airport and stay in a choice of Taiz hotels, available in every price range. From Taiz, it is easy to explore the diverse geography of the region; beyond the mountains lies the Tihamah coastal plain, featuring the famous coffee port of Mocha.
