Luxor intro. Spectacular deserts, the fertile Nile Valley, ancient Royal tombs, magnificent Middle and New Kingdom temples and the heritage of Egypt's religious and dynastic capital greet visitors to the bustling city of Luxor, in the south of the country. The small city's West Bank, the site of ancient Thebes, holds most of the important archaeological treasures, including the Valley of the Kings, the Valley of the Queens and the Western Valley sites. The modern city with its fabulous museums, bus and train stations, restaurants and Luxor hotels lies along the River Nile in the East Bank district. The 'real Egypt' is found on the outskirts of the West Bank and in its desert surroundings, best seen via donkey, horse or camel trips or a two-day felucca cruise along the Nile to Aswan. Pharaoh's Stables, close to the ferry terminal, is the starting point for a journey into the country's amazing history and its peoples' traditional lifestyles. The old market set close to Luxor Temple is a delight, with bargaining over endless cups of tea a mandatory experience. Author:
