Rye intro.Rye is a town of more than 8,000 people on Victoria's scenic Mornington Peninsula. The town is just 50 miles south of Melbourne, meaning that Rye hotels can get particularly crowded with city-dwellers, especially during the summer holidays. Given the town's coastal location, it is unsurprising that water sports are the town's biggest attraction. Popular pursuits include kite-surfing, fishing and yachting. The beach is also popular with conventional surfers, but it is worth noting that lifesavers do not patrol this beach. The town centre is concentrated around the junction of Point Nepean Road and Dundas Street, near Rye Pier. The town's annual carnival takes place next to the pier's car park each summer in December. Point Nepean Road runs parallel to the coastline, hosting a number of fine dining establishments. Those interested in local history could visit the Old School House on Collingwood Street. This building is home to the town's historical society. A couple of miles to the south of the town centre, golfers can play a couple of the local courses; Moolah Links and the Dunes Golf Links.
