Atherton intro. The formerly volcanic region of Atherton is often thought of as one of Australia's best-kept secrets. Comprised of red volcanoes, mountains and lakes, this rural region is between the Great Dividing and Bellenden Ker ranges. It features a wide range of attractions, including hot air ballooning, fishing and white water rafting. There are numerous tour companies that offer daily wildlife cruises, where visitors will have the opportunity to see some exquisite water birds, including herons and darters. The town experiences comfortable temperatures throughout the year and nature lovers can take advantage of its walking trails located in Mt Hypipamee National Park, which is filled with several types of possums and other native species, including the Lumholtz tree kangaroo. Located throughout the region are various reservoirs, the most famous being Tinaroo Lake. In order to experience the local ambience, visit one of the weekend markets to purchase locally-grown fruits and vegetables. Atherton hotels are in the low to mid price range and include motels, B&Bs and quaint cottages.
