For those scared of heights, just look up in the sky early morning and you may see one or more of these colourful, floating balloons.
Boise - have fun with science at the Discovery Center of Idaho
The Discovery Center of Idaho is the best kind of science museum, one that you can actually touch, play and experiment with some of the exhibits. As well as being very informative, there are a number of exhibits that are different and unusual and demonstrate certain aspects of science in an easy to understand way. The center is suitable for all ages, but particularly good for the under 12s.
Boise - try hiking and cycling at Bogus Basin Mountain Recreation Area
Bogus Basin Mountain Recreation Area is located just outside of Boise, and has something to offer all year round. It is at its best during the winter, when it offers over 2,600 acres of skiing, both Alpine and Nordic. The ski slopes are often open ( depending on conditions) until late in the night. During the summer there are beautiful, varying grade hiking and cycling trails that offer scenic views. Lodges are also available for over night stays or for social occasions such as wedding receptions or birthday parties.
Boise - visit the Basque Museum and Cultural Center
Basque immigrants escaping persecution of their home country of Spain, settled in the Boise region of Idaho. They soon became known for their hard work. The Basque Museum and Cultural Center shows the history of their time, with a range of exhibits and collections of historical clothing and photographs. It is also still, even today an important meeting point in the city, for those with a Basque heritage.
Boise - explore the old Idaho Penitentiary
A trip to a penitentiary is not always thought of being fun, but take the opportunity to visit the old Idaho State Penitentiary. It started life as a single cell, way back in 1870 and was expanded over the years by the convicts as overcrowding became a problem. It was not until the end of 1973 that it ceased to serve as a prison. In its time, it has housed over 13,000 prisoners, and is reputed to be haunted, which is maybe not surprising as over 500 inmates died, whilst serving their jail terms.
Meridian - enjoy a day at the Wahooz family fun zone
Right next door to the Roaring Springs Water Park, is the Wahooz Family Fun Zone, with its wide collection of games and rides. All the family can be entertained and have fun here all day, with the two, 18 hole crazy golf courses being particular favorites. The racing go karts and kiddie karts are also popular rides, plus also are the bumper boats. The park is also a great place to organize a birthday party or for other special occasions or events.
Meridian - have a splash at the Roaring Springs Waterpark
Located just outside of Boise, is the Roaring Springs Waterpark, which has a selection of rides, flumes, slides and lazy rivers to enjoy. Whatever your age, there is something here to enjoy, especially during the hot summer months, and is particularly suited to families with young children. The park is open at weekends in May and September, and every day during the months of June through to August.
Meridian - see great racing at Meridian Speedway
They have been racing at the Meridian Speedway for over 60 years, and every year sees great racing, with everything from standard stock cars to privateers tearing around the quarter mile oval. Twenty one different classes of races normally take place between mid April and late September. The raceway is a great place to take the family, as there are special price family tickets available.
Meridian - take a walking tour and explore the Old Town
Meridian has preserved its Old Town area. Some of the old buildings, date back 130 years or more. A walking tour around the old district allows you to take in some of the historic buildings, that have been perfectly preserved, including the Pine Street School. This was a former, small, one room schoolhouse that has been renovated and converted into a museum, that displays past Meridian and school life. The Scarecrow festival, which is normally held annually on the 1st October, is always a fun event to attend, as hundreds of scarecrows are set up and dotted around the town and district.
Meridian - sip the fine wines at the Terra Nativa Vineyards
There are over 20 different vineyards in Idaho, each producing unique wines. Some of the more enjoyable ones are produced at the Terra Nativa Vineyards, which is sited a short drive from Meridian. This vineyard specializes in red wines. All of their fine, juicy grapes are harvested by hand in an old, traditional manner. Tastings at the vineyard are possible and recommended, via making an advance appointment.
