Jeddah, Al Balad intro.
Al Balad is regarded as the main historical district in Saudi Arabia's second-city, Jeddah. Much of the architecture here is characterised by coral houses, embedded with horizontal wooden-beams. Nowadays, however, these ancient buildings stand side-by-side with more modern shopping centres. The most upmarket of these are home to designer brand-names, more commonly seen in Paris, Milan or London. However, guests staying at Al Balad hotels are still able to haggle at the traditional Eastern markets (souks). The most famous market street is Souk al-Alawi, lined with coral houses on both sides. Visitors should note that they technically need a permit to take photographs here, but those without one will find that it is usually no trouble, providing that they ask vendors first. Guests can also visit Naseef House, the former home of one the best-known trading families in the city. The building is now open as a museum and offers some excellent views from its top floors. Al Balad is located in the south of Jeddah, easily accessible by taxi from King Abdulaziz International Airport.
