Orpheus Island hotels map
Orpheus Island intro. Orpheus Island is a remote destination off the coast of Queensland, Australia. There are few facilities on the island besides exclusive resorts and a research station operated by James Cook University. These resorts are known for hosting excellent Orpheus Island hotels. Most people who stay on the island book a package with their resort, which includes transfers from the mainland. There are daily seaplane departures offering scenic flights taking around 30 minutes from Townsville. There are also daily flights from Cairns, while charters can be arranged from some other airports. Given the island's location on the Great Barrier Reef, diving and snorkelling are the most popular activities. There are a range of diving trips, from taster dives suitable for beginners to full-day trips to the outer reef. Alternatively, avid hikers can choose from a variety of guided walks with knowledgeable guides. This way, guests can learn about the island's tropical environment or even enjoy wine tasting after a sunset walk to Hazard Bay lookout. A longer walk to Picnic Bay, taking around two hours, offers the chance to learn about the history of Orpheus Island.
