Karijini hotels map
Karijini intro. Home to massive gorges and canyons in the heart of the desolate Pilbara region of Western Australia, Karijini National Park is the second largest of its kind in the state, covering over half a million hectares. The park is best avoided in the heat of summer when temperatures regularly reach 40°Ce. Unsurprisingly, this is major kangaroo country but there is a host of other animal species here including bizarre-looking echidnas and gaonnas, huge stripy lizards that feature strongly in aboriginal culture. The scenery here is spectacular, with a huge number of gorges, pools and waterfalls that ensure a surprise at every turn. The heavy levels of iron ore in the ground mean much of the striking rocky formations here take on a distinct red hue. Karijini National Park hotels are centred on the northern section, near Wittenoom, which lies on the main road east to west between Tom Price and Juna Downs.
