King Island hotels map
King Island intro. A scenic landmass that seems a million miles away from the major city of Melbourne, north across the Bass Strait, King Island lies halfway to Tasmania yet it feels far more remote. There are few roads here, which makes it an excellent destination for cycling and walking. The island is famous for its excellent, locally produced food, particularly lobster and dairy products, all of which are sourced here. The main town, Currie, used to be a mining centre but today it feels more like a sleepy village with its harbour, indoor swimming pool, art gallery and good selection of restaurants and cafes that serve up local fare. The ferry from Melbourne docks here just once a week although there are air connections from the Australian mainland that are more frequent. The majority of King Island hotels are found in Currie and Naracoopa, the island’s two biggest settlements, both of which lie on the coast.
